FAQ'S

HOW DO I GAIN / RENEW / REVALIDATE MY CERTIFICATE?
To gain a new qualification, you will need to undertake a course with an Approved Training Organisation, after which you will need to apply through your local Marine Safety Agency. To renew or revalidate your current qualification, you will need to lodge your application with your local Marine Safety Agency.

WHAT IS REQUIRED WHEN PROVING MY SEA SERVICE?
Sea service may be provided in the following formats: a declaration; an approved sea service log book or taskbook; or a letter from the operator, owner, master or chief engineer of a vessel detailing the sea service accrued by you.

CAN I START MY COURSE ANYTIME?
Yes you can start your course anytime and start remotely. This method of training is not for everyone. If you find once you have signed up for remote studies that this is not working for you, you are welcome to attend classes when they are available and if there is enough space for you.

DOES YOUR COLLEGE ISSUE THE LICENCE?
No we do not issue a licence. Once you have completed all the necessary requirements and have successfully completed your course work you will be required to book a final Oral examination with the Department of Transport - Australian Maritime Authority as your final check off. Once you have successfully completed this they will issue you with a temporary authority and your licence will then be sent to you.

HOW MUCH SEA TIME DO I REQUIRE FOR MY LICENCE?
The amount of sea service required will depend on the level of qualification you are applying for and whether or not you are completing a taskbook. You can contact us for the student handbook with all the requirements or you can go to AMSA Click here for a full list of the Guidance notices on AMSA website.

WHY ARE YOUR COURSES HALF THE TIME OF OTHER COLLEGES?
We work 6 days a week, your classes start at 0700 each day and you ONLY have 3 breaks during the day. It is important to us not to waste your time, you have probably just completed a stint at sea, the last thing you want is to sit in a class room unnecessarily. YOUR TIME IS VALUABLE AND WE VALUE YOUR TIME.

IF I NEED EXTRA HELP, WILL I GET ACCESS TO THIS?
Most certainly, it is about getting you through this process and we try not to leave anyone behind. If you are struggling, the assessors can be available to you during your breaks or after hours as required. As long as you are making the effort we will work with you to achieve a successful outcome.

I HAVE LOADS OF EXPERIENCE AND FEEL I SHOULD BE ELIGIBLE FOR RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING, DOES ECA MARITIME COLLEGE OFFER RPL?
YES we do, however sometimes this can be quite a painful process. UNLESS you have great evidence all documented it maybe just as easy to do the course. By all means CONTACT US for the RPL application for the course you wish to apply.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS IF I CHOSE TO APPLY FOR RPL?
We have an application for you to complete. When you are ready to submit, we will require a payment of $1000. This is used to assess your application. Should your application be rejected or should we require you to attend classes for gap training a training plan will be developed and the cost of your course will then be calculated. The $1000 will come off your course fee, we do not charge you twice. We cannot determine a pathway for you or determine the course structure you require without this application. Everyone's situation is very different as you can imagine. We have a simple process for you to follow and we specialise in RPL.
